How to Play Pot Limit Omaha

Omaha poker is a variation on Texas Holdem, and therefore Pot Limit Omaha is another variation of both games. To understand how to play Pot Limit Omaha poker you need to understand the rules for Limit Omaha and regular Omaha poker. The difference between Pot Limit and Limit Omaha poker is the betting structure. We will outline how Pot Limit Omaha is played for you below. The first thing you should know about Pot Limit Omaha poker and other limit Omaha poker games is that a player can bet what is in the pot. Instead of a specific betting limit applied to each round of betting like Limit Omaha Poker, the limit is the pot. For example if you have 100 pounds in the pot after the first round of bets then you can bet a hundred on the next round.

Each player will offer a bet for the game to begin. This is the small blind bet that is signified by the betting structure you are playing. Once the bet has been offered on the table four cards are dealt. These cards are either called the pocket or hole cards. After the cards are dealt the big blind must be offered to the table.

The dealer will then start dealing the first “flop.” The flop is when cards are dealt face up on the table and placed in the centre for all players to see. The first flop is only three of the five cards to be dealt. The players must immediately state that they want to remain in the game by offering another bet. This third bet is going to offer the fourth card of the flop. It is considered a “turn” deal. Again another round of betting will ensue. On this round of betting the community cards are completed with the “river” card or the fifth community card. It is the final card to be offered on the table. After the final card is dealt another round of betting will take place. At this point players can also fold if they don’t think there is a hand to win, rather than placing the last bet. In fact at any betting stage the player may elect to fold rather than stay active.

If there is more than one player left in the game at this point the last person to bet or raise will have to show their cards. The pot is won with the best five card hand that is shown. In the event that everyone folds the last player in the game will have to throw in their bet in order to win the pot. In other words the last round must have all bets and raises made before the winner can take the pot. Most often there are at least two players left in the game at the end of the betting round so the cards have to be shown. The only way to bluff is to make everyone fold before the end of the game.
